Rod Younger

Here at SpainStruck we´re deeply saddened by the sudden death of Rod Younger of Books4Spain.

Although neither myself nor my husband Ramón were close friends of Rod, we were in frequent contact with him and always found him to be cheerful, helpful, knowledgeable and friendly.

Rod helped me to believe in my writing abilities when he asked me for reviews of books about Spain which were on sale on his website.

Passionate about Spain and reading, Rod worked incessantly to promote books in English about Spain among the expat community here. He sought to  create a personal, customer-oriented online bookstore to challenge the facelessness of larger concerns. In so doing, he provided writers and reviewers with an online sense of community.

Upbeat and optimistic, Rod never let chronic pain from a medical condition interfere with his heavy work schedule or endless reading list. His condition, though incurable, was not life-threatening and so the news of his fatal heart attack has come as a great shock.

I´ll remember him as he was last September in Madrid on El Espejo´s terraza: funny, friendly and really great company. I´d made a new friend and now I miss him.

Que descanses en paz, Rod.

  1. Fond memories of school days in Shortlands, Kent. He was headboy and always destined to be successful. I hadn’t seen him for 30 years, but had an opportunity to meet with him 3 years ago on route from Malaga to Seville. Sadly, I decided I’d do it “next time”. RIP, Rod.

  2. Thanks for your tributes. Rod’s funeral will be at 12:00 on Friday in Marbella. The other shareholders of Books4Spain are meeting to discuss its future. I agree it shouldn’t go down without a fight as it was Rod’s passion and is his memorial.

    • Thanks for this information. It´s good to hear that Books4Spain might survive without its wonderful frontman. Good luck and if we can be of any help let us know.

  3. I met Rod for the first time last year, he was such a ‘live wire’ and put enormous effort into Books4Spain, bringing a touch of culture and class to the internet. I hope it will be continued in his memory. I cannot believe this lovely man who was ‘younger’ in every sense is no longer with us and he will be much missed.

    • I admired him a great deal and was touched by how much he loved his little cat companion JJ. I hope JJ will be well looked after. Maybe someone will continue with the online book store that Rod put all his energy into. We´ll miss him too Belinda.

  4. Nice, simple tribute to a wonderful man who did the same for me. I’m very saddened by his sudden death and hope his legacy with Books4Spain continues to live on.
